If you’re planning a holiday in Croatia or you’ve already arrived and are wondering what to do in Crikvenica, you’re in the right place.
I’ve lived in Crikvenica my entire life and spent the last 15 years working with tourists during the summer season. For the past four years, I’ve been running kayak, SUP, and e-bike tours and rentals, guiding hundreds of visitors every year. One thing I’ve learned is that most visitors experience only a small part of what Crikvenica has to offer.
Many tourists spend their entire holiday on the main beach promenade. While the beaches are beautiful, there is so much more to discover. Hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, calm bays, local food, cycling routes, and unforgettable sunset experiences are waiting just beyond the town center.
In this guide, I’ll share the activities, places, and experiences that I personally recommend most often.
Why Visit Crikvenica?
Crikvenica is one of the most accessible seaside destinations in Croatia. Many visitors arrive by car from Central Europe, while others fly into Krk Airport and reach the coast shortly after landing.
What makes Crikvenica special is the combination of:
- Beautiful beaches and crystal-clear sea
- Outdoor activities for all ages
- Scenic viewpoints overlooking the Adriatic
- Green countryside and mountains close to the coast
- Excellent local food and wine
- Easy access to nearby islands and national parks
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or a full week, there is more than enough to keep you busy.

1. Join a Morning Kayak Tour to Hidden Beaches and the Eyes of Riviera Viewpoint
If I could recommend only one activity in Crikvenica, this would be it.
The Morning Exploring Kayak Tour combines kayaking, swimming, hidden beaches, and a short hike to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area: the Eyes of Riviera viewpoint (Vidikovac Staza Valova).
The adventure begins on the water as you paddle along the coastline toward Kačjak, one of the most beautiful beaches near Crikvenica. Along the way you’ll discover quiet coves and hidden swimming spots that are difficult to reach on foot.
The highlight of the tour is a short hike to the viewpoint overlooking the entire Crikvenica Riviera. The panoramic views of the coastline, the sea, and the nearby island of Krk make it one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the region.

2. Experience a Sunset Kayak Tour with Cocktails Delivered to Your Kayak
Watching the sunset is beautiful.
Watching the sunset from a kayak while floating on the Adriatic with a cocktail in your hand is even better.
The Sunset Kayak Tour offers a completely different atmosphere from the morning tour. The sea becomes calmer, the temperatures are more pleasant, and the coastline is bathed in golden evening light.
The experience ends with cocktails delivered directly to your kayak while you relax on the water and watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.
Guests often tell me this is one of the most memorable evenings of their holiday.
As one visitor put it:
“Great atmosphere watching the sunset from the water with a cocktail in your hand.”

3. Rent a Kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard and Explore at Your Own Pace
One of the biggest surprises for visitors is how calm the sea often is, especially during the morning hours.
This makes Crikvenica an ideal destination for beginners who want to try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding.
Renting a kayak or SUP allows you to:
- Explore hidden beaches
- Visit quiet swimming spots
- Escape crowded beaches
- Enjoy the coastline from a completely different perspective
Many visitors who have never tried paddleboarding before are surprised by how easy and enjoyable it is.
The calm water and sheltered bays create perfect conditions for first-timers.

4. Discover the Green Side of Crikvenica on an E-Bike Tour
Most visitors expect beaches.
What surprises many people is how green the countryside behind Crikvenica actually is.
An e-bike tour is one of the best ways to discover this hidden side of the region.
The route leads away from the coast and into the peaceful countryside surrounding Crikvenica, passing vineyards, forests, traditional villages, and beautiful viewpoints before reaching Lake Tribalj.
Lake Tribalj is one of my favourite places in the area. The calm surroundings feel completely different from the busy coastline during summer.
Visitors often tell me they never expected to find such peaceful nature only minutes from the sea.

5. Rent an E-Bike and Explore the Riviera
If you prefer exploring independently, renting an e-bike is a fantastic option.
The Crikvenica Riviera offers beautiful coastal roads and scenic routes suitable for cyclists of different experience levels.
An e-bike allows you to cover much more ground than walking while still enjoying the scenery.
You can easily combine beaches, viewpoints, restaurants, and nearby villages into a single day of exploration.

6. Hike to the Old Town of Kotor
One of the most underrated activities in the area is hiking to the old town of Kotor above Crikvenica.
The trail leads through beautiful natural surroundings and rewards hikers with stunning views over the coast.
Many visitors never realise that within a short distance of the sea they can find historic ruins, hiking trails, and panoramic viewpoints.
After the hike, I often recommend continuing to nearby Konoba Karoca, where you can enjoy local food and wine in a peaceful setting away from the busy promenade.
It’s one of my favourite combinations for visitors who want a more authentic experience.
7. Spend Time on the Best Beaches
Of course, no visit to Crikvenica would be complete without enjoying its beaches.
Kačjak is one of my personal favorites because of its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere.
The main beaches are excellent as well, especially for families, but I always encourage visitors to explore beyond the busiest areas.
Some of the most beautiful swimming spots can only be reached by kayak, paddleboard, or a short walk away from the crowds.
8. Try Local Food and Wine
Food is an important part of any holiday, and Crikvenica offers plenty of excellent options.
Some of my personal recommendations include:
Restaurant Domino
Located in nearby Dramalj, this is one of my favorite places for local food and wine.
Gostiona Zrinski
A great option in the town center with traditional Croatian dishes and a welcoming atmosphere.
Pizzeria Remi
Perfect for a relaxed lunch after a morning activity.
9. Play Padel or Tennis
If you’re looking for additional activities, padel and tennis are both great options.
They are especially popular among active travellers who enjoy mixing beach time with sports and outdoor recreation. Both Padel and Tennis, you can find near the Omorika beach in Dramalj.
10. Take a Day Trip
Crikvenica is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
One of Croatia’s most famous natural attractions, known for its turquoise lakes and waterfalls.
Krk Island
Connected to the mainland by bridge, Krk offers beautiful beaches, historic towns, and excellent restaurants.
Both destinations can easily be visited as day trips.
Common Mistakes Tourists Make in Crikvenica
After years of talking with visitors, I’ve noticed three common mistakes.
1. Staying Only on the Main Promenade
The promenade is beautiful, but it’s only a small part of what the region offers.
2. Never Exploring Beyond the Town Centre
The countryside, viewpoints, and nearby villages are often more memorable than the busiest tourist areas.
3. Missing the Outdoor Activities
Many visitors spend every day on the same beach without realising they could be kayaking to hidden coves, cycling through nature, or hiking to spectacular viewpoints.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Crikvenica?
Every month has its advantages.
June
My personal favourite month.
The weather is warm, the sea is comfortable for swimming, and there are fewer crowds.
July and August
The busiest months of the year.
The sea is at its warmest, and this is actually the perfect time to join kayak, SUP, or e-bike tours and escape crowded beaches.
Late August and September
Another excellent period with pleasant temperatures, warm sea, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
If you enjoy outdoor activities, June and late August are hard to beat.
My Perfect Day in Crikvenica
If you only have one day, this is what I would recommend.
- Start with a coffee at Sax Bar or Cafe Bar Tina by the sea.
- Join a morning kayak or e-bike tour before the temperatures rise.
- Enjoy lunch at Restaurant Domino, Gostiona Zrinski, or Pizzeria Remi.
- Spend the afternoon swimming at Kačjak Beach or exploring hidden beaches by kayak or SUP.
- Finish the day with a sunset kayak tour and enjoy a cocktail while floating on the Adriatic Sea.
- It’s hard to imagine a better way to experience Crikvenica.
Final Thoughts
Crikvenica is much more than a beach destination.
It’s a place where you can paddle to hidden beaches, hike to panoramic viewpoints, cycle through green countryside, enjoy local food and wine, and still spend plenty of time relaxing by the sea.
After living here for 30 years and guiding hundreds of visitors every season, my biggest piece of advice is simple:
Don’t stop at the promenade.
The best experiences in Crikvenica begin when you start exploring.
